Summer is now here with ballgames, picnics, gardens and putting up all the produce we pick.  My love is making jams and jellies.  I look forward to Wold’s having berries ripening.  But I will not totally put down my knitting.  Must knit.  And must get a newsletter out.  Many fun yarns have come in. Visilk comes in fun bright colors from Elsabeth Lavold, and she has another great book too. Ella Rae’s Lace Merino handpaint is soft and colorful.  In a word, it is wonderful and one skein will knit up a nice shawlette.  Opal’s new line, Continents, has arrived.  Asia, in its fabulous greens and yellows, has sold out and has been re-ordered.

Recently I was able to attend a weekend class with Cat Bordhi.  She is the author of Treasury of Magical Knitting, and A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting, New Pathways for Sock Knitters, and Personal Footprints for Insouciant Sock Knitters (Insouciant- the happy, warm feeling you have when nothing is troubling you).  The class was amazing!  Not only is Cat a fabulous knitting instructor she is a lovely person.  She had never been in Iowa before and would like to come back.  I have her tentatively scheduled during the second week of May 2013.  Yes, it is not a typo, 2013 is the earliest she could come.  Whenever she can come we will enjoy her immensely.

The Danish yarn, Kauni Effektgarn is here.  This sport weight/fingering weight Shetland type yarn is well known for its amazing long color runs. With 5438 projects being done on Ravelry, this yarn is great for shawls, scarves and sweaters.  Try a traditional Danish Fishmonger Wives shawl, More Than a Triangle Shawl pattern by Stitched Together Designs on Ravelry.  There is also a good article on the Danish shawl in the Spring 2008 Spin Off.  There is a copy in the shop that can be read in the shop. Please check out this amazing pattern,  Kauni Damask Understated bag.

Several new books have come in recently and two of them really stand out.  Knit Noro has new fresh ideas using Noro yarns.  The patterns in the book are so very Noro.   The next book is one Cat Bordhi is very excited about.  She works with a knitting initiative, a group of people interested in writing knitting books and self publishing.  Cat worked closely with the author Sandra McIver to get out the fabulous book Knit Swirl.  This is an incredible circular sweater which Cat says looks fabulous on nearly all body types.  Another book on nearly seamless knitting came in and went out just as fast.  I have ordered more.

The knitting instructors at the Blue Heron have already started talking about some of the classes they would like to teach.  These will most likely not start until September but look for felted clog (the clog class will be early fall as you may want to make a pair for everyone in your family), felted project basket, the braids cardigan (repeat by demand), and several others.  We are always looking for ideas, so if you have an interest in a technique or project let us know.  We are always willing to accommodate a group with a knitting class.  Don’t be shy.

Classes with Kris Henderson, fused glass jewelry.

Kris Henderson is a fused glass artist who loves to teach others how to create special one of a kind pieces of jewelry. Her classes are scheduled for two days, one to create, then the next to put on findings (earring backs etc).   Day one is typically from 10a-1p on a Saturday.  Day two is scheduled at the first session.  Cost for the class is $45 for 6 hours of instruction plus $25 to make 4 pieces or $20 to make 2 pieces of jewelry.  Besides the scheduled classes groups can schedule their own time with Kris.  She is happy to offer private classes to groups of 4 or more.  Scheduled dates:  July 9 and 10, August 13 and 14, and September 10 and 11.  Location for all classes is the lower level of Blue Heron Knittery.

Contact Kris at klhenderson7@aol.com, or phone 563-387-6027.
